NYC Schools
For over two decades, the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project has worked to help New York City's elementary and middle school teachers establish effective reading and writing workshops in every classroom. The Project provides intensive, multilayered support to its member schools. For example, principals, assistant principals and reading specialists gather at monthly conferences and in school-based study groups. Building-based coaches meet in small groups on Fridays about every other week for intensive, field-based study. Teacher-leaders from Project schools meet in rigorous Leadership Groups one evening a week. Member schools send teachers to any of 300 full-day conferences ("Calendar Days"). New York City schools usually receive 30 days of on-site professional development.
