How Can A Teacher, a School, a District Work Closely with The Reading and Writing Project?
The Reading and Writing Project is eager to work with schools in New York City—public, charter, and private schools—as well as with schools in surrounding suburbs, districts across the US, and distant corners of the world. Requests exceed our capacity but we regularly forge relationships with new schools and are eager to talk with you about that possibility. Priority is usually given to schools that also receive a sequence of site-based work.
Our on-site work in schools includes:
• a sequence of school-based staff development days. Spaced throughout the year, these usually involve demonstration teaching, in-class coaching, assessment-support, and study groups on lifting the level of methods on particular units of study or on supporting students with particular needs. Usually this work involves the entire faculty and may focus on reading, writing, and/or content area literacy. The cost for this is approximately $1750/day. Schools within NYC receive a reduced rate.
• site-based summer or mid year institutes. Usually 4-5 days long, the content and format of these are tailored to the needs of the participating school.
• study groups to support literacy coaches, ESL, inclusion teachers and administrators.

Services at Teachers College include:
• Conferences for teachers (9am-2:30pm) on reading, writing, phonics, content-area literacy, data-based assessments and so forth. The days are tailored to specific grade levels, K-8, and are staffed by TCRWP leaders as well as national literacy leaders. Over 150 days are offered each year. The calendar of offerings for the upcoming year will be available here starting in June 2010. For now, you can view selected months of last year's Calendar of Conference Days so as to imagine the upcoming year. Tickets are $65 per day, reduced rate for schools securing other services.
• Institutes. The four 2010 summer institutes include sections for K-8 teachers and administrators. Registration for the upcoming Summer Institutes is almost closed. The cost for this year's Summer Institutes is $650 per person. Each year the TCRWP also offers institutes on content area literacy (February) and literacy coaching (October and February). Please click here for more information on our Institutes.
• Literacy coach groups: Designed to support Literacy Coaches in learning to do the same staff development that the Project’s staff provides, coaching groups are small, intensive courses of study which meet one full day, a bit less than every other week, at various locations. Participating coaches teach and coach, draft units of study, share transcripts of conferences, role play, small group work and develop and study assessments. The Projects’ 2010-2011 groups will be developed in June 2010. In the upcoming year, participants may select one of four 3-day intensive workshops as well as participate in 15 study group meetings. The cost of participation in the literacy coaching group is $1750 per person per year. NYC schools receive a reduced rate. Please click here for more information on our Coaching Groups.
• Parent Conference Days: Across the year, the TCRWP provides several conference days designed for parents to enable them to better understand how to support their sons and daughters. These conference days include many optional break out sessions, tailored to particular age groups of the children and encompassing reading, writing, social studies and the like. These conferences are free to districts working closely with the Project. Please click here to download the schedule from a previous Parent Conference Day.
• Assistant Principal Study Groups: Housed not only at TC but also in Mentor Schools, these study groups in the upcoming year will be led by the TCRWP most senior leaders (including Calkins, Tolan, Pessah, Ehrenworth, and Mentor-Superintendents Farina and Kotch.) Some of these groups will be tailored to AP’s from far away places and will involve three Sunday-Monday-Tuesday intensives. Some, for suburban Long Island AP’s will be scheduled one day a month and housed in a suburban Long Island school. Some will serve for Middle School AP’s with responsibility for leading social studies as well as English language arts curricular reform. Please click here for more information on our AP Study Groups.
• Principal Study Groups: One Wednesday a month, school leaders convene to hear quest speakers including Mike Fullan, Tom Sergiovanny, Roland Barth, Dick Nesbitt, Howard Gardner and so forth as well as major literacy leaders, and to work in small study groups with TCRWP leaders in order to receive help leading school wide literacy work. These conference days are only available in conjunction with other offerings. Please click here for more information on our Principal Study Groups.
• Leadership Groups and Specialty Courses: Most of the current TCRWP staff developers and teacher-leaders have emerged from the organization’s most rigorous structure: leadership groups for teachers. Every year, leadership groups bring together a small cadre of expert teachers who inquire and invent around a topic of special interest. In the year ahead, we anticipate groups on content area literacy, comprehension pathways, small group work, technology and other topics. The cost of this is $600 per course. Please click here for more information on our Leadership Groups and click here for more information on our Specialty Courses.
